Relaxing holiday
My wife and I had nearly three weeks at the Sunrise festival le Jardin. The staff could not be more friendly and it was good value for money. Weather was exellent.
grand makadi 5* hotel
Just returned from a wonderful holiday at the Grand Makadi in Hurgarda. This is my 2nd stay at this excellent hotel where you are looked after from the moment you arrive. Holiday rep meet you in airport as soon as you arrive, good transfer direct to hotel approx 35 mins. Junior suites, excellent accommodation, very clean lovely views of gardens or sea view.Food also excellent, especially a la carte dinning, just book your restaurant day before. Staff very friendly,can\'t do enough to help you. I travelled on this occasion with my grown-up daughter, and felt very safe and had no problems been \"hasselled\"at this hotel, which can often happen in Egpyt. Therefore it was a very relaxed and enjoyable holiday and will certainly be returning there.
5* Star Luxury at the Hurghada Marriott
I was a first time visitor to Egypt and any misconceived ideas i had prior to my travels were quickly proven wrong from the moment we landed... we had decided to arrange our own transport from the airport to the Hotel (research we had done prior to the trip had given us a good indication of what we should be paying for taxi rides and hard bargining was always recommended) the cost of a taxi from the airport to our hotel should cost us around 50-100 local which is about 6-12 GBP which is cheaper than the coach transfer and alot quicker.... we paid 60 so were more than happy.
As soon as we arrived at the Marriott we were treated like royalty the staff (99% male which was a bit worrying at first for 2 female travellers) were very friendly and the hotel was immaculate. we were shown to our room which had the most amazing view over the bay. Anyway i could go on about how great the hotel was all day but I'lll keep it short. If there is one thing that i recommend you should do whilst in Hurghada and that is book a scuba / snorkelling trip with the Aquarius scuba club. I had the most amazing experience ever, the boat crew are such fun and very attentive. the dive sites are beautiful, waters warm and the fish are vibrant.
For meals and drinks i suggest that you go down to the Marina, plenty of lovely bars and restaurants that cater for all tastes and very good value too (try the local wine its lovely).
If you love seafood try El Mina (close the marina) the shrimp are huge and cheap but be aware that they do not sell alcohol but you can take your own.
And finally, one word of warning, ALWAYS pre-agree a price with the taxi drivers before getting in and make sure they agree the price is for the party and not per-person. We encountered a couple of taxi drivers that tried to pull a fast one, one even switched the money we had given him and then tried to tell us that we had given him the wrong money! but after some strong but firm words (and i mean strong) he gave up and dropped us off at the destination and drove off with his tail between his legs.
Other than that we had one of the best holidays ever and would definately go back, hopefully soon.
First time Visitor to ElGouna
I found the resort of El Gouna really peaceful, clean and friendly. The local transport of the Tuk Tuks (Tok Toks) was great fun and the selection of local shops, bars and amenities had everything you want for a relaxing holiday.
The Three Corners Ocean View El Gouna
Been to Egypt four times, we love it, friendly people, guaranteed sun! Remember the culture is haggling, its a way of life there, but all part of the fun!
Stayed in El Gouna this time, a man made resort supposedly more 'upmarket', I found it different to Hurghada itself, the Marina is a nice area for an evening out, the shop staff/locals do not harrass you as much as in Hurghada.
Ah now! The Three Corners Ocean View Hotel - What a shame, this hotel is in a prime location right on the Marina BUT it is tired and in dire need of some painting and decorating and new furniture. The reception area is poor, talk about first impressions! Food is quite good for standard All Inclusive, its saving grace I think. There are two parts to the Hotel The Soliel main area and The Du Port annexe, I think they allocate most newcomers. The Du Port which is a stroll away from the main hotel and the dining room, I did not like the dark gloomy atmosphere of the room they gave us on arrival, I asked for a move to the main building and was shown to an equally small dark room with no balcony which we refused, (apparently this is a regular occurence) I insisted on a better room with balcony and was given a newly decorated one overlooking the Marina (25 rooms have been recently decorated). This was okay but the cleanliness of the hotel is of a poor standard, usually you see cleaners throughout the day but there were None here! IT COULD BE A GOOD HOTEL WITH MINIMUM EFFORT.
Now in El Gouna you can use the Dine Around Programme which all of the eleven hotels participate in, you must take advantage of this as it gives you the opportunity to dine at and look around the other hotels for a very cheap price (20 EGP) about £2.00 sterling. We visted The Movenpick Hotel and The Sheraton Miramar, both five star hotels.... these two have got it right! GOOD HOTELS! The swiss owned Movenpick is a really nice Hotel, if I were to go back to El Gouna it would be to either of these two hotels. Great thing about El Gouna is local transport, very good and cheap to travel. YOU MUST GO on the TUC TUCs or TOK TOKs. 5 EGP about 50pence to travel anywhere in El Gouna.
I really prefer Hurghada to El Gouna but I had a good holiday and it made a change.
Lovely quiet holiday
We stayed at the Domina Makadi Bay Hotel in March 2009. There is nothing wrong with it. If you go expecting 5 stars you will be disappointed. The staff (other than the bar staff) are extremely friendly and helpful. It's clean, the rooms are basic but large and clean. The food is okay, it’s not the best, the only thing wrong with it is that on the whole it is aimed a the Russians - which the hotel is full of, as I believe from talking to other English tourists most hotels in Egypt are. There is a large selection so although you may not like all of it you will definitely find plenty to eat. We never went hungry.
It is in the middle of nowhere, so if you are expecting nightlife then forget it, unless you want to pay taxis back from Hurghada, minimum of 80 EGP. Two downsides to Egypt is the tipping, be warned if you haven't been before you need extra money just for that, it is expected everywhere. And the harrassment you get just trying to do a bit of shopping. There are shops at the hotel so contrary to other reviews that say you can't get anything there, you can. We bought swim shoes and snorkels here but could have got them a lot cheaper at the hotel shop. Most things in Egypt are expensive as well. Do not go thinking it's cheap. Also if you are doing All Inclusive the Vodka is vile. Not imported. There is very basic entertainment in the evening, sometimes funny, but it is not near the bar and not the best of places to sit which spoils it. Plenty of trips to go on, the sea is beautiful but you do need shoes as there is coral and stones. All in all, a nice place to stay, but it is quiet in the evenings.
